Annapolis pest control

We are Maryland's top experts in wildlife and raccoon control. We are not a typical Annapolis raccoon control or pest control company. We don't treat wild animals like insects, because they are not! You can't just use poison to get rid of them. You also can't just set a few traps on the ground and call it good. Each situation is unique. And remember, if you have raccoons living in your house, it is almost certainly a female with a litter of young inside. These juveniles must be removed by hand, or they will starve to death and die. And after they are gone, the entry holes into the house must be sealed with professional repairs. Unlike most Annapolis pest control, we focus on complete and permanent solutions, by following these steps:

  • Inspect the entire house, ground to roof, and the attic
  • Seal shut all entry areas with professional grade steel
  • If in attic, we remove the baby raccoons by hand
  • Technical and human raccoon trapping appropriate to situation
  • When necessary, we clean raccoon droppings and replace insulation

Annapolis Raccoon Control Tip: Will Ammonia And Mothballs Drive Raccoons Away From Your Home?
Home remedies have long been used as ways to drive away pest animals, and while historically these would have been shared with neighbors or families, with the internet the number of home remedies is actually thriving online. Among the most common of these is the use of chemicals with a strong scent to drive wild animals away from a particular area, with ammonia and mothballs regularly cited as being effective repellents for raccoons. As with any repellent product, trying to ascertain how effective these area at driving wild animals away is not straightforward.

The Theory Behind Using Chemical Repellents
The theory behind using these types of chemicals as a repellent is that the scent of the ammonia or mothballs will prove as unpleasant to the sensitive nose of the raccoon as it is to the human nose. When the raccoon finds that scent it will then ideally find that to be an unpleasant substance to be around, and will then move itself and its family to another area, where it will not have to deal with that scent.

How These Are Used To Repel Animals
When it comes to the application of both chemicals, because they come in a different form, each one is applied differently. Ammonia will come in fluid form, so most people will suggest that a small amount of the chemical is poured into a saucer or shallow bowl and placed near the area where the raccoons are causing a nuisance. Mothballs actually come in small cotton-like fluffy balls, so these can simply be placed directly in the area where the raccoons are causing problems.

How Effective Are These Substances As Repellents?
The truth is that there is little evidence to suggest that either mothballs or ammonia can have any effect on the presence of raccoons, even when the scent can remain strong such as in a confined space like the attic. In many cases, the animals appear to be happy to tolerate the unpleasant smell in order to be able to retain the benefit of a warm and dry nesting spot. There are a range of other repellents that are also available, but most of these suffer with similar problems in terms of effectiveness, although some studies show that raccoon eviction fluid can help to deal with some raccoon problems.

Using Eviction Fluid To Drive Raccoons Away
In order for raccoon eviction fluid to be effective, the first step is that it does need to be used in a confined space such as an attic or loft space, otherwise the scent can become wafted away and be ineffective. It is made from the urine of male raccoons, and this is important as male raccoons are known to kill the offspring of other males in order to promote the success of their own offspring. For this reason, eviction fluid can be effective when you are trying to deal with a female raccoon with a nest of babies, as the fluid can cause females to become fearful for her babies, and then look for a new nest.

Alternative Methods Of Dealing With A Raccoon Problem
While the attraction of using repellents to deal with raccoons is obvious, the truth is that the vast majority of these options will prove to be ineffective, and you will still then have a raccoon to deal with after having used these products or home remedies. Ultimately, trapping and removal is the most effective way to deal with a problem raccoon, with the cage trap required being relatively inexpensive, and can be placed with food from your kitchen as bait.
